The need for a baby to chew on something or to rattle to make a noise, was catered for many many years ago. Coral was believed to have great power and was used in nearly all teething rings and rattles. It was often combined with gold, silver or gilt objects which were mounted on.  Dutch, French and German examples survive from the 17th Century, but they were very rare in England or America before 1750.  During the 18thand 19th centuries cast silver decoration was extremely popular as were bells to shake and whistles, which were all attached to the final piece. Coral was later replaced by mother of pearl or ivory.

Nowadays teething rings are often made from plastic or silver and have a variety of different silver objects attached. The Silver Rooms have teething rings with teddy rattles and hearts. These make perfect keepsakes. We are also able to offer rattles in varying shapes, all these make great Christening gifts and are something to keep and cherish.

You can find all our Sterling Silver rattles and teething rings in our Christening section of the website under the side heading novelties http://silverrooms.co.uk/silver-childs-gifts.aspx   .

Please note that all our teething rings and rattles are keepsakes they are not toys.

The story of the Armada Dish dates back hundreds of years to the reign of Elizabeth I.  Silver which was supposedly taken from the Armada was used to complete a banqueting service for Sir Christopher Harris.  The service was made up of 22 dishes all of varying sizes, bearing the arms of Sir Christopher Harris and at that time the London Hallmarks.  Around 1645, during the Civil War, the service was buried in a field adjoining Dartmoor, to avoid seizure by the Parliamentary Troops. The service was eventually recovered in the 20th Century and carefully restored.  The Armada Dish is often seen as a piece which symbolises our country’s victory over the Spanish Fleet.

Although the Armada Dish dates back hundreds of years its plain design makes it a timeless piece, bought for all occasions.  The Silver Rooms  can offer the Armada Dish  in varying sizes. It is a truly beautiful piece which has been hand spun from a single piece of silver. You will find the Armada Dishes in our SILVER TABLEWARE SECTION under the heading SILVER TRAYS & DISHES  http://www.silverrooms.co.uk/silver-trays.aspx
